in Rouen; and for ten years he endured surgeries and injections. He gained
strength and was invulnerable to most pains. The Scientists implanted wings in
Darsus’s back. He learned to fly with them and hide them from human eyes. On his
twentieth birthday, there was an accident, the scientists pushed his strength
limit too far and Darsus fought back. Within minutes the laboratories were
destroyed and the scientists were either fleeing or dead. Darsus flew as far
away from the horror as he could, felt the call of the wind and the warmth from
the sun. He was free and swore to remain so. His flight led him to Paris, and he
worked for a blacksmith.

occult. At eight, the year she trains to be a woman, Celeste learned the secret
of her mother’s past and present; the gift and curse that passed from

objects without physical touch. During a raid in Bolbec, Celeste was separated
from her mother and never saw her again. Scared and lost she joined a
travelling company heading to Paris to trade their goods. There, Celeste became
a fortune teller’s apprentice.
